Video Management Made Easy in the Cloud

The way in which video is created, reviewed, edited, and distributed is changing rapidly. This is driven by a number of factors. First, there are now multiple platforms with multiple formats for distribution, meaning that video content producers have multiple versions of each asset and increasingly complex processing and delivery workflows. Second, the ability to distribute video content globally with relative ease fosters stakeholders in different geographies with a need to review, edit, and approve those videos.

Finally, the type of company producing video content has changed significantly. It is no longer just large-scale broadcasters delivering video. Video is produced by a wide range of companies and individuals for a wide range of reasons. Large broadcasters through pure OTT providers, corporate enterprises using video for marketing, government and educational organizations, and even individuals prepping content for YouTube or Vimeo, have a stake in the media content chain.

All these entities have vastly different workflows, but at the same time, they all need to acquire, produce, edit, store, and archive content. And that requires highly flexible management of a wide range of content, from video and images to metadata and graphics. In a global context, some of that workflow may need to be in the cloud to achieve requisite flexibility.

AWS Elemental MediaConvert is a file-based video transcoding service that enables the creation of on-demand video content for broadcast and multiscreen delivery. The service functions independently or as part of AWS Elemental Media Services, a family of cloud-based services with pay-as-you-go pricing that provide customers with the capability to ingest, process, package, and deliver video content at scale.

iconik is a cloud-based video hub that enables media customers to easily manage, share, discover, and collaborate on media content in the cloud or in a hybrid cloud environment. Content is secure yet globally available. Using a hybrid architecture, assets can be stored in the cloud, on-premises, or as a mixture of the two, while enabling full access to the entire library when needed.

iconik API integration with AWS Elemental MediaConvert enables customers to easily transcode various video formats, while keeping media well organized, making it easy to find the right versions and ensure the correct version is distributed to the correct platform. Hybrid workflow support means that users can easily collaborate with other stakeholders. Within iconik, editors can capture content in different locations and keep that content locally in its native format. Proxies and thumbnails are automatically pushed to the cloud, meaning that all stakeholders can search across an entire shared library of content. AWS Elemental Media Services provide automated ingest and origination, transcoding, packaging, and delivery of that content.

iconik is also integrated with AWS Elemental Server. This means that users can use their existing AWS Elemental Server deployment to transcode high-resolution files locally to proxies and automatically send those proxies to iconik. This is a particularly attractive workflow where performance is key, enabling users to transcode extremely rapidly.

AWS Elemental and iconik workflow

File-based video workflows combine AWS Elemental MediaConvert with iconik to automate media conversion and distribution of on-demand content. iconik applies flexible, customized transcoding profiles in AWS Elemental MediaConvert to produce multiple renditions, transfer content to on-premises or cloud storage, or send content for publishing and distribution via third-party applications. Customers use these file-based workflows as an integral part of video post-production, media conversion, and syndication workflows.

iconik has a simple user interface, making it is easy to navigate and discover content within a library. It also intelligently pushes content suggestions based on a user’s unique profile. This includes suggestions based on what is trending, previously watched, and recommended.

Assets can be shared with other users at any point in the media lifecycle within the platform, as well as with external stakeholders via a simple email link. Users can review, edit, comment, and approve. Access control ensures that only the right people get the correct level of access on an asset-by-asset basis.

iconik also enables customers to leverage other AWS services within its infrastructure, including cloud storage with Amazon S3 and Amazon EC2, global content delivery using Amazon CloudFront, and deep learning based image and video analysis with Amazon Rekognition. Thanks to in-depth video analysis, media assets can be searched based on highly specific information about the content itself. This makes it easy to find content with a specific theme or location, for example.
