Typical use cases

The way in which video is created, edited, and distributed, varies from company to company and industry to industry. This results in many different customers in different industries using Cantemo Portal™ in countless ways, each a little bit different from the next. Below we will outline a few of the typical cases we are seeing from our customers. It is of course possible to support multiple of these use cases on one deployment bringing different departments uses cases under one system.

1. Post production management:

In these cases, users manage incoming production footage and organize for use into NLEs and various other tools.  Portal becomes the hub for all incoming and finished media, helping to quickly organize, provide workflows such as for editing, collaboration and review & approve, and providing a path into archive and distribution.

2. Archive front end:

It’s possible to use Portal only for managing retention of their master and completed files.  Deployment can be done in the cloud, in front of a large tier 2 storage, or a tape library.  Having a proxy and metadata for all items means that anyone can search the archive from almost anywhere without having to know how the tape library works, where the storage are, or where the assets lives in the storage. Portal is used for finding and recovering files that are then copied to production storage or to distribution methods for sharing or re-use.

3. Distribution and sharing platform:

Because Portal has a comprehensive storage management toolkit as well as a extremely capable workflow engine for automating movement and transcode of video, image, and audio files, it is a great tool to help streamline distribution of data between different business units.  Portal becomes the hub watching various different groups of storages and allowing copy, move, and transcode between different business groups.

4. Workflow file management:

Media environments that aren’t production, but still require strong filesystem management and search/recovery of assets can also benefit from the capabilities of Portal. It brings a strong API and allows third party products to easy share information and let Portal handle management of the filesystem and location for these tools.

Within the broadcast industry there are a number of scenarios, but the three most common ones are:

1. Longform content management.

In this scenario, Cantemo Portal™ is used to manage longform programming, such as TV series, films, and other programmes. Rules can be established to trigger what happens to a piece of content at a given time in the workflow. For example, this could be transcoding it into a different format, file movement, or metadata transformation, amongst many other things.

2. Short form promo management.

When it comes to handling short form content, such as promotional videos, the approach can be very different. Broadcasters will have a great deal of information which needs to be attributed to each campaign, such as how many different channels it will go out on, length of each of the promos, with potentially different versions needed for different channels. It will also change as the item being advertised gets closer. In these instances, Portal can help organise and deliver different versions for different channels or different days and times.

3. News gathering

In most broadcast organisations, there will be different types and teams of user gathering news or content from the field. For the quick breaking news stories, the teams will be looking to ingest the recorded video into Cantemo Portal as quickly as possible, whist in the field, so it can be reviewed and a decision can be made on whether the content is worth publishing in very little timeframe. Other teams will be generating long form or commercial content, which will have different, generally longer workflows. Having existing content easily searchable and usable within Portal means that journalists can bring in existing assets to further support their stories.

Portal helps those news organisations handle multiple teams, with clearly defined workflows for each team. They are also generally looking for seamless integration with the archive so footage can be exported to archive, yet still be easy to find and track what can and cannot be re-used and for what purposes.

In all three scenarios, Portal will likely be used for reviewing and sharing assets for approval, delivering final masters to be sent for transmission, archiving masters to remove from high performance storage to archive storage, and helping to deliver finished programs.

Ad versioning can be an extremely complicated task, ensuring a commercial has different versions for different platforms, languages, and regions. These can often vary hugely depending on the audience and can lead to hundreds of versions for one advert. A good workflow is a must to manage the master and all the different versions with their corresponding metadata.

NLE integration is generally really key for the ad world, with many agencies needing to make and review content within their content editing platform. Some ad agencies also have existing project management systems, which we will integrate into Cantemo Portal. For others, it may be a case of having a custom built project management system created by one of our partners.

Cantemo Portal has also been used in the utilities sector, where companies use video to inspect equipment. Being able to easily compare new footage to previous entries can be crucial for ensuring any changes are spotted instantly before it causes a problem for the company or operations.
